Snapshot from Japan

Tokyo, 17 October 2005 I thought it would be a nice use of the blog to give a quick interim report from Japan. I arrived here Saturday evening, and we've had some excellent meetings so far. It pays to be reminded from time to time just how relationship oriented Japanese businesspeople are. After a number of private meetings, last evening we had a dinner with top executives of two major Japanese companies in Tennessee and worked to further cement those relationships. If I did very much o...

Today I took part in a small ceremony that was very much about why I ran for Governor. At Burgess Falls State Park, we had a ceremonial signing of the legislation that created the Tennessee Heritage Conservation Trust and provided an initial $10 million to get it started on the right foot. There were perhaps sixty people; some of the legislators who helped make it a reality (Charlotte Burks, Charlie Curtiss, Jere Hargrove and Mike mcDonald), representatives of conservation groups, some park ...

National Governor's Association - Des Moines, IA

Des Moines, IA Monday, 18 July 2005 Let's try and get this blog up and running again. I've spent the last two days at the National Governor's Association (NGA) summer meeting, which was held in Des Moines this year. About 30 governors were there. It was hot and humid, and we are in Biloxi next summer. I lobbied the governors of Maine and Montana to host a summer meeting in _their_ states! A few observations from the meeting: First, I had been told that NGA was a very non-partisan...

Saturday Morning in East Tennessee

11:00P Did an enjoyable and renewing graduation speech yesterday, at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport. A beauiful Tennessee morning on the football field with about 340 graduates. While I was politely and warmly received, I kept in mind the Gary Trudeau admonition that graduation speeches are important because you shouldn't let new graduates out into the world unsedated. It was a clear, cool morning, with a handsome graduating class and a lot of proud parents--a snapshot of the best...

First blog entry

11:10p My first blog entry, ever (the one on 5/9 was not from me). When we put up the new web site containing a Phil blog last week, I didn’t expect that it would create the buzz that it has. Since Monday, I’ve heard from TV, newspapers, people on the street, emails, and lots of traffic in the blogosphere (reported to me, I’m not a user) about various things especially including whether I would be doing the postings vs a staff member. So let me start by setting some ground rules for myse...
